California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus Mobilizes for Janice Hahn for Congress

State Senator Ted Lieu and Assemblymember Warren Furutani headline grassroots Asian Pacific Islander voter outreach in Congressional District 36, urging vote for Hahn on July 12

LOS ANGELES – California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus (CDP API Caucus), API elected leaders, and activists across Southern California mobilized for Janice Hahn for Congress, going door-to-door urging voters in Congressional District 36 to vote for Janice Hahn in the Special General Election on July 12.

State Senator Ted Lieu and Assemblymember Warren Furutani rallied CDP API Caucus grassroots activists and volunteers from Los Angeles and Orange Counties who gathered at the Janice Hahn campaign headquarters in Torrance.

“This election, the choice is clear: Janice Hahn for Congress. Hahn is the only qualified candidate for Congress with the experience and expertise to represent District 36. She is an outstanding leader who is not afraid to stand up to special interests and fight for the working families and children to protect the critical services that our community desperately needs. On Election Day, I urge all South Bay voters to vote for Janice Hahn: she is the voice we need in Congress,” said Sen. Ted Lieu.

Several API Democratic organizations joined the voter outreach efforts, including CDP Filipino American Caucus, Filipino American Los Angeles Democrats, Korean American Democratic Committee, and Asian Pacific Islander Democrats of Orange County.

“As a City Councilmember representing one of the most diverse districts in Los Angeles, Janice Hahn understands the needs and struggles of immigrant and minority communities. As a Congress Member, she will be a fighter standing up for affordable housing, creating jobs, and making sure that the voices of minority communities are heard in Congress. I urge Asian Pacific Islander voters and all voters alike to choose wisely: Janice Hahn for Congress,” said Asm. Warren Furutani, Chair of the California API Legislative Caucus.

Hahn’s Tea Party Republican opponent spent more than half million dollars to win a second place finish in the Special Primary Election in order to head into the Special General Election. His campaign and supporters have engaged in an appalling and misleading smear campaign against Hahn.

“The Tea Party Republicans are banking on low Democratic turnout in this Special Election to capture this critical Congressional seat and advance their extremist agenda. They spent more than half-million dollars to make it to the Special General Election against Hahn. We must not let another wealthy Republican buy his way to public office, trample on the interests of average Americans, and roll back the progress that Democrats have made. We must make sure Janice Hahn wins on July 12,” said Clark Lee, Chair of the CDP API Caucus.

The Congressional District 36 Special General Election is on Tuesday, July 12. Polls are open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM. For polling place and Election Day information, visit the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s website at www.lavote.net. Vote-by-mail ballots must be received by Election Day; they can be turned in at any polling place on Election Day.

Statement of the California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus on Nevada Republican Congressional Candidate Mark Amodei’s Ad

LOS ANGELES – California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus Chair Clark Lee released the following statement on the xenophobic and racist ad by Nevada Republican Congressional candidate Mark Amodei in the Congressional Special Election:

“The California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus strongly condemns Nevada Republican Congressional candidate Mark Amodei’s appalling ad. The use of racist, xenophobic, and discriminatory language and imagery to rile up voter sentiments is despicable.

“Mr. Amodei’s ad, a fictional Chinese newscast, depicts a Chinese invasion in the United States, with an animation of the Chinese army marching through Washington and a Chinese flag flying over the U.S. Capitol. The Chinese newscaster, speaking in English with an accent, claims that President Obama ‘kept raising the debt limit,’ that the U.S.’ ‘…independence became a new dependence…as their debt grew, our fortune grew. And that’s how our great empire rose again.’

“Anti-Chinese and anti-Asian sentiments in America have had devastating consequences in U.S. history, such as the Chinese Exclusion Act, the Japanese American internment during World War II, and the senseless murder of Detroit autoworker Vincent Chin during the U.S. auto crisis 29 years ago this week. We do not need another inflammatory ad such as Amodei’s to perpetuate xenophobia and racism against Asian Americans.

“This attempt to mislead and frighten Nevada voters with racially insensitive images and scare tactics is abhorrent, incredulous, and unwarranted. These depictions and words have no place in this campaign and no place in America. No candidate should resort to offensive racist tactics to score political points, especially a former Party chief.

“The California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus demands that Mark Amodei immediately remove this ad. Most importantly, we demand Mr. Amodei issue an apology to the people of Nevada and the Asian American community.”

Warning: This video contains highly offensive and objectionable audio and visual content.

Statement of the California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus on the Filibuster of Goodwin Liu’s Nomination to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals

LOS ANGELES - California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus Chair Clark Lee released the following statement on the Senate Republican filibuster of Goodwin Liu’s nomination to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals:

“The Senate Republicans’ filibuster of Goodwin Liu’s nomination to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals today is a blatant disregard for fairness, equality, and diversity. The Republicans’ continued partisan attacks to mischaracterize Liu, a highly-regarded Asian American legal scholar with the highest possible rating by the American Bar Association, through the entire nomination process are pure partisan political ploys. Their scheme is not only a setback for Asian American civic participation and representation on the federal bench; it is an undermining of the American democratic process.”
