After acquiring a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Science from Cal State East Bay, her doctoral degree from U.C. Berkeley School of Optometry in 1995, and being appointed Director of Alameda Contra Costa Counties Optometric Society (ACCCOS) MCT School Vision Screening, Dr. Ong started her private practice and was elected President of ACCCOS and Trustee for Board of the California Optometric Association. In 2007, she received the “Optometrist of the Year” award for her legislative work to educate local, state and federal legislators on bills relating to eye care and public safety. She worked simultaneously with various communities locally and internationally to promote preventive care through vision screening clinics and media presentations. Beyond her dedication to her profession and public health, Dr. Ong has been an avid volunteer for Earthwatch, Sierra Club, Child Assault Prevention Program, Keep Hayward Clean and Green Task Force, Filipina Women’s Network, Hayward Democratic Club, Assembly Member Joan Buchanan’s campaign and many other unique pursuits. She is currently serving on the Board of the League of Women Voters, but it was the recent election of President Obama, her efforts for the Obama Work groups, as well as her work with legislators at health screening clinics that inspired her to take action now and contribute her efforts to the Democratic Party.
